After 6 years Apple has again launched iPhone SE 2020 (second generation) at just $399 which has an exact design of the iPhone 8 with tons of improvements. After almost a year of rumors, this phone was released in April 2020.

iPhone SE is cheaper than XR and comes with the latest A13 Bionic chip. The overall performance and camera of the iPhone SE at such a price is really surprising. On the other hand, iPhone XR is $200 more than that of the iPhone SE and has a bigger display, support face ID, and a bigger battery. Design & Display

iPhone SE has a compact design with just 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm dimensions. This phone is very popular among users who like a compact phone. iPhone XR with 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3 mm dimensions is quite bigger and thicker. But since SE has the Touch ID and smaller display, its design is considered old-fashioned by many buyers. On the other hand, iPhone XR has a modern design with a Face ID and a full display with a notch. Both the phone has Gorilla glass on the front and has an aluminum frame.

iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina IPS display, while iPhone SE has only a 4.7-inch Retina IPS display. Since XR has a 6.1-inch display, it has a higher resolution than that of SE, but they have exact pixel density. The difference in viewing experience with the displays of these phones is negligible.

iPhone XR is available in Black, White, Red, Blue, Coral, and yellow, whereas iPhone SE is limited to Black, White, and Red only.

Both these phone has an identical 12 MP cameras at the front and 7 MP cameras at the back. But iPhone SE is capable of capturing better pictures because of the presence of the latest A13 chip.

Rear cameras of both phones can record videos up to 4K at 60 fps. The front-facing cameras of both phones take similar photos with little differences in skin tone. iPhone SE can record videos at 1080p/30fps, while iPhone XR can record at 1080p/60 fps.

iPhone SE is powered by the third generation A13 Bionic chip which is the same as the latest iPhone 11 pro, which is a major highlight of the iPhone SE 2020. iPhone XR is powered by a second-generation A12 Bionic chip which is also a good processor. Because of the A13 chip, iPhone SE is quite faster and power-efficient than iPhone XR. Both these phones have Haptic Touch without 3D touch.

There is not a big difference in the performance of these two phones in day-to-day usage. But iPhone SE performs much better and smoother than iPhone XR in terms of gaming and multitasking. Games like PUBG and FORTNITE require more CPU and GPU power loads faster on iPhone SE and navigating around the apps is also very smooth.

In AnTuTu Benchmark, iPhone SE got a total score of 462532 while iPhone XR got 403983.

The audio quality of iPhone XR is better than that of iPhone SE with their stereo speakers.


iPhone XR has a 2942 mAh battery while iPhone SE has only 1821 mAh battery. Apple claims that with the A13 Bionic chip iPhone SE performs 20% faster with consuming 40% less power. That is the reason iPhone SE gives a longer battery backup compared to iPhone 8 though they have an identical battery. But iPhone SE cannot last longer than iPhone XR in terms of battery life.

Both the phones support fast charging and wireless charging. Apple has done a great job by proving wireless charging for iPhone SE at such a low price.


If you want a compact and powerful phone but don’t want to spend $600/700 on it, then SE is the best choice as it is quite cheaper than iPhone XR. Though the front look of the iPhone SE is a bit old-fashioned, you will get excellent overall performance, photos, and videos.

If you are not comfortable with the front older design, touch ID of iPhone SE, and don’t need 20% extra performance, but want a modern-looking iPhone with better battery backup and a bigger display, then iPhone XR is for you.
